How to Use a Pour Over Coffee Maker at Home

How to Use a Pour Over Coffee Maker at Home

There's a moment, just before the day begins, when everything is still. And for a few quiet minutes, the world belongs entirely to me. That's why I love my pour over routine.

As part of my health ritual, I always drink a full glass of warm lemon water to hydrate before I drink one drop of coffee, it is something I have done for years and it has worked well for me.

More than a brewing method, my pour over is a staple— a deliberate, unhurried practice that ends with something extraordinary. If you've been curious about making pour over coffee part of your morning, here's how:

What You'll Need

At Lassen at Home, we believe your equipment should feel as good in your hands, and it should look as amazing as the coffee tastes. Oh, and before we get into it — I never start my ritual without the right soundtrack. Here's what I'm usually listening to on Spotify: My Morning Pour Over Playlist ✨

Here's what you'll need:

  • A ceramic or glass pour over dripper (our Terra Cotta Coffee Pour Over is a beautiful place to start — and a Handcrafted Artisan Mug to match). I NEVER use anything made out of plastic, even though they're often cheap, don't settle, use quality tools for your health and for the flavor.
  • A premium gooseneck kettle for precise, controlled pouring (the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro in Matte Black w/ Walnut is my go-to — we also have beautiful ceramic spoon rests that you'll love).
  • Freshly ground coffee — medium-coarse grind works best (we've got ya — browse our grinders and organically roasted coffee from Cornerstone Coffee Roasters).
  • A paper or reusable pour over filter (I love, love, love the If You Care unbleached compostable filters — they're better for the planet and they don't add any papery taste to your brew. You can find both the No. 4 and No. 2 sizes in our Coffee & Tea Accessories).
  • An amazing ceramic mug (my favs are available in our store). TIP: I like to prime my cup with boiling hot water, to retain the heat of my coffee (yes, I always drink hot every morning- no matter what time of year). And if you're on the go like me, we have insulated travel mugs and tumblers that keep your pour over hot on the move — I love the NOMAD Flip Tumbler and the NOMAD Camp Mug for this. The Roam Mug is another favorite for a more classic travel mug feel.

Now to the Ritual

Step 1 — Boil your water. Heat water to around 200°F (just off the boil). While it heats, I usually take a few deep breaths. This is a great time to chill.

Step 2 — Rinse your filter. Place the filter in your dripper and pour hot water through it to remove any papery taste and warm/prime the vessel. Discard the rinse water.

Step 3 — Add your coffee. Use about 1–2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 oz of water, adjusting to your taste. (I like my first coffee big, strong and robust, so I pour 18 ounces of water with 6 tablespoons of coffee, try it out, you'll love it!)

Step 4 — The bloom. Pour just enough water to saturate the grounds — about twice the weight of the coffee — and wait 30 seconds. Watch as the coffee blooms and releases its gases. This is worth the wait, don't skip this part my friend, trust me.

Step 5 — The pour. Slowly pour in the remaining water in steady, circular motions from the center outward. There's no rushing this part, so I drink my lemon water and wait patiently for my pour over to fill.

Step 6 — The perfect cup. When the last drop of water falls through the filter, your coffee is ready. For me, I add little organic half & half, if not concerned about breaking a fast.

TIP: Don't forget to rinse your pour over out with warm soapy water, otherwise you'll risk residue build-up and increase the potential for mold growth.

In a crazy world that moves way too fast, pour over coffee makes us slow down — if only for a moment. That intentionality carries into everything that happens next, my POV.
